Navjot Kaur becomes first Indian woman to win gold at Asian Wrestling Championships
Navjot Kaur, writing himself in history books, became the first Indian woman to win gold at the Senior Asian Wrestling Championship on Friday.
Navjot gave Japan's Mia Imai 9-1 in the final and gave women the chance to become the champion in the 65 kg category.
The 28-year-old Navjot has been around the wrestling circuit for some time as he first won silver in the Asian Championships and bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games 2014 in 67 kg in 2013.
Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik won a bronze medal in the women's 62kg category, which was in a tough fight with Kazhakstan's victory against Aayulim Kazimova in the play-off 10-7.
In India, there are now a gold medal, a silver and four bronze medals in the competition.
Navjot dominated the final bout and relied on his strong defense to stop Mia's fast pace attack in the initial stages.
Prior to the break, before making a profit of 5-0, he made a 2-0 lead with a counter-attack.
Mia was forced to attack to attack the second and final round but dominated Navjot and a winner was won.
Yesterday, Phogat got the silver medal for women in 50 kg category (freestyle) after losing to Chinese wrestler Chun Lee by a small mining of 3-2.
