Indian-origin researchers develop handy blood pressure app, hardware.

To facilitate the accuracy of cuff equipment and the convenience of mobile device apps, a team of Indian-origin researchers has created a new app and hardware to measure blood pressure.

The technique, which was published in Journal Science Transpendental Medicine with one video, also includes the discovery of a more convenient measurement point.

Head writer Anand Chandrasekhar said, "We targeted the transverse palmer pulley artery on a different artery, fingers, so that we can get better control of the measurement."

"We were excited when we confirmed this place, being able to use our fingers makes our approach very easy and more accessible," said Chandrashekhar, a doctoral student at the University of Michigan.

The approach uses two sensors - an optical sensor at the top of the force sensor. A centimeter attached to the back of the sensor unit and other circuitry phones are kept in thin case.

Users turn on the app and press their fingers against the sensor unit. With their finger on the unit, they keep their phones at the heart level and watch the smartphone screen to make sure that they are applying the right amount of finger pressure.

"One important point was to see that users can apply finger pressure properly over time, which remains in the form of long-term hand cuff measurements," senior author Ramkrishna Mukkamal said.

"We were happy to see that 90 percent of the people were trying, they were able to do it easily after just one or two exercises," said Mukkkal.

This invention can give patients a convenient alternative and keeping a log of daily measurements produces an accurate average, sometimes discounting the measurement discrepancy.
