Roger Federer defeated Germany's Philipp Colshreiber 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 in the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, which is being held in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Swiss Ace is now just one win away from regaining the number 1 ranking. As ATP World Tour's No.1 player (302), 36-year-old has a record of most weeks already, but he is not in the top spot since late 2012.
Now only the Netherlands Robin Haas, a 6-4, 6-0 winner, stands on its way on Thursday night Dutch Wildcard Tallone GerrisSpore.
Colchreiber, who had never defeated Federer in previous first-class matches, made a 5-2 lead in the first set tiebreaker and then the set point pair was 6-4.
Although Federer made the tiebreaker's level and then made his own four set points, in the end, he shot a forehand winner and changed the last match.
The second set was also fought very close, but Federer got an important service break in the 11th game and then got the match out on his first occasion.
Federer was later told on the ATP World Tour Web site, "It was extremely complex tonight".
"I could not find my range or my rhythm, I think that Philip did it to me, it was a struggle today when the score was off, so I could not release my shots, so it was a fight."
In the quarter-final finals of this indoor hard court ceremony, Federer will try to raise his entire record for the 3-0 success.
He won straight sets in his last two games.
If he can do that, he would be the oldest player to have ATP No. 1 ranking. American star Andre Agassi currently has this distinction, with the rankings for the last time at the age of 33 years and 131 days.
Federer was dropped out of the top 15 in the ranking, when a knee injury had stopped him before the 2016 season, but he made a remarkable comeback in the game since January 2017.
He won the Australian Open and Wimbledon last year and then successfully defended his Australian Grand Prix title by increasing his Grand Slam title from last month to 20.
